On January 7th, 2023, at 2:39am Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officers assigned to 2 District (Niagara Falls / Niagara-on-the-Lake) responded to a fight/disturbance in the area of Ferry Street near Temperance Avenue, in the City of Niagara Falls.
Upon arrival, officers located a 42-year-old male suffering from a significant laceration on his upper torso. The victim was assessed at the scene by Niagara Emergency Medical Service (NEMS) paramedics prior to being transported to an out-of-town trauma centre for advanced medical care. The injury has since been determined to be non-life threatening and the victim is listed as being in stable condition.
Witnesses on-scene indicated the suspect fled the area on foot eastbound toward Stanley Avenue. Officers located the suspect approximately 200 meters away and placed him under arrest.
Detectives assigned to the 2 District Criminal Investigative Branch have assumed carriage of the investigation. They are being supported by detectives from the Forensic Services Unit. The injuries sustained to the victim have been determined to have occurred as a result of having been pinned by the suspect against a sharp edge in a nearby wrought iron fence.
Jesse WEICHMANN (19 years) of Bliss, New York, located in the United States of America has been arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault, contrary to section 268(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
WEICHMANN is being held for a bail hearing scheduled to take place later today (January 7th, 2023) via video link to the John Sopinka Courthouse located at 45 Main Street East, in the City of Hamilton.
