Welland Traffic Stop Results in Recover of 103.2 Grams of Fentanyl

On November 7th, 2023, at 10:54pm a Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officer assigned to 3 District (Welland / Pelham) was on general patrol in the area of King Street near Third Street, in the City of Welland when a white 2018 Hyundai Elantra was observed travelling on King Street.

A traffic stop was conducted, resulting in driver of the Elantra exiting their vehicle and becoming argumentative with the officer.  The driver was unable to surrender any identification and provided his name verbally.  When the verbal name provided did not match with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) database, he was placed under arrest.

Search of the vehicle incident to arrest resulted in the recovery of 103.2 grams of suspected fentanyl and photo identification belonging to the driver, confirming the name previously provided was indeed false.  The estimated street value of the seized fentanyl is $20,000.

Jama NASIR (35 years) of Etobicoke, Ontario has been arrested and charged with the following criminal offences:

• Possession of Fentanyl for the Purpose of Trafficking

• Disobeying Order of the Court

• Obstruct Peace Officer

NASIR remains in police custody at this time.  NASIR is scheduled to attend a bail hearing later today (November 8th, 2023) via video link to the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse, located at 59 Church Street in the City of St. Catharines.
