The Ontario government reported 1,740 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the seven-day average to 2,346.
The Niagara Region reported 93 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of 66, but still under the 100 or more daily reports in recent weeks.
There were also 63 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 5,909 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported eight new COVID-19 deaths on Thursday. In total, 284 people have died from the virus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 1,740 cases of #COVID19 and over 30,700 tests completed. Locally, there are 677 new cases in Toronto, 320 in Peel, and 144 in York Region,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter Tuesday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Waterloo with 77 new cases, Windsor and Hamilton with 59 new cases, Guelph with 55 cases, and Durham Region with 51. Other public health units reported 50 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 17,877 vaccine doses were administered in Canada bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 857,826. That means that 1.968 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 9,707 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 295,817 administered across the province so far. That’s 2.01 per cent of the provincial population.
Approximately 251 new doses were administered as of Monday morning. A total of 3,641 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.
A total of 3,641 people have been vaccinated in Niagara Region by Niagara Public Health. Niagara Health says it has administered 2,417 vaccinations to health care staff.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 6,058. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 1.352 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.

Niagara Region trends
Today’s numbers are back under 100 this week with 93 reported today and 66 cases reported yesterday, the lowest daily case count since Dec. 26 when 61 cases were reported. Case numbers over the weekend remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
The death count went up by 15 cases over the weekend, by 15 on Monday, and by eight today. This brings the total number of deaths to 276. Deaths are reported three times per week by NRPH on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
1,466 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 258,700 total cases, with 229,755 cases resolved. There are 1,466 cases in hospitals, with 383 in intensive care and 298 283 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by 68, the number of those in intensive care decreased by 14, and patients on ventilators increased by 15 since Monday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 7,445 with 5,738 resolved. Of those cases, there are 1,423 active cases, decreasing by 64 since Monday and 51 active outbreaks, same as Monday.
