Ontario is reporting 1,054 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the seven-day average down to 1,084.
The Niagara Region reported 13 new cases today, a decrease from yesterday’s report of 23 cases.
There were also nine new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 6,893 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported no new COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday. In total, 369 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 1,054 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 54,900 tests completed. Locally, there are 363 new cases in Toronto, 186 in Peel and 94 in York Region,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Wednesday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Simcoe-Muskoka with 53 new cases, Windsor with 50 new cases, Waterloo with 44 cases, and Ottawa with 40. Other public health units reported 40 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 29,406 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Tuesday bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 1,631,771. That means that 3.055 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 17,141 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 602,848 administered across the province so far. That’s 4.088 per cent of the provincial population.
Approximately 203 new doses were administered as of Monday morning. A total of 9,729 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.
A total of 9,729 people have been vaccinated in Niagara Region by Niagara Public Health. Niagara Health says it has administered 7,251 vaccinations to health care staff.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 16,980. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 3.791 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.

Niagara Region trends
The Niagara Region numbers remain under 30 per day over the weekend and so far this week dropping to nine on Monday, the lowest daily case count since last Thursday’s when three cases were reported. This was the lowest case count since Oct. 13 when one case was reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
The death count went up by one over the weekend and by three on Tuesday. No new deaths were reported today. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the Niagara Region to 369.
718 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 296,173 total cases, with 279,230 cases resolved. There are 675 cases in hospitals, with 287 in intensive care and 182 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 43, the number of those in intensive care increased by four, and patients on ventilators decreased by four since Tuesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 8,514 with 7,889 resolved. Of those cases, there are 256 active cases, decreasing by ten since Tuesday and 19 active outbreaks, same as Tuesday.
