Ontario reported 4,156 new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the seven-day average to 4,003.
The Niagara Region reported 174 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of 150.
There were also 28 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 7,610 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported one new death today. In total, 378 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 4,156 cases of #COVID19 and over 54,200 tests completed. Locally, there are 1,254 new cases in Toronto, 593 in Peel, 476 in York Region, 340 in Ottawa and 248 in Durham.,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Wednesday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Halton Region with 192 new cases, Hamilton with 189, London with 121, and Waterloo with 106 cases. Other public health units reported 100 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 189,326 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Wednesday bringing the total number of vaccines administered across the country to more than 8,790,657. That means that 20.940 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Over 112,817 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 3,422,974 administered across the province so far. That’s 23.21 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 3,270 new doses were administered as of Wednesday morning.
A total of 38,759 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.

The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 116,500. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 26.011 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.

Current COVID-19 tier: Province wide-lockdown until May 6.
Previous tier: Red-Control until April 8.
The region reported cases over 100 this weekend with 122 cases on Saturday and 149 cases on Sunday, the highest daily case count since Jan.16 when 175 cases are reported. Cases decreased slightly on Monday with 105 cases reported. Cases increased on Tuesday with 150 cases reported. Wednesday’s report surpassed Saturday’s and Tuesday’s report with 174 cases reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
No new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend. One new death was reported on Tuesday and one new death was reported on Tuesday. The COVID-19 death count measured since the start of the pandemic is 378.
1,877 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 398,835 total cases, with 354,417 cases resolved. There are 1,877 cases in hospitals, with 642 in intensive care and 442 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by 55, the number of those in intensive care increased by 16, and patients on ventilators increased by 20 since Tuesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 11,300 with 9,709 resolved. Of those cases, there are 1,213 active cases, up by 95 since Tuesday and 30 active outbreaks, down by one since Tuesday.
