Ontario reported a drop of almost 1,000 cases 3,469 new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the seven-day average to 4,319.
Yesterday Ontario reported 4447 new cases. That’s 978 more than was reported today or a one day drop of over 20 per cent.
With new lockdown rules put in place 12 days ago, the stay-at-home order could be showing signs of working to reduce new infections.
The province also reports a test positivity rate of 10 per cent, down from the a record rate of 10.5 per cent a day ago.
The Niagara Region reported 144 new cases today, a decrease from yesterday’s report of 169.
There were also 22 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 7,757 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported no new deaths today. In total, 384 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 3,469 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 40,600 tests completed. Locally, there are 1,074 new cases in Toronto, 775 in Peel, 406 in York Region, 256 in Durham and 197 in Ottawa,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Tuesday morning.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 151,328 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Tuesday bringing the total number of vaccines administered across the country to more than 10,394,746. That means that 24.888 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Over 90,409 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 3,995,187 administered across the province so far. That’s 27.051 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 3,342 new doses were administered as of Tuesday morning.
A total of 45,468 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.

The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 138,514. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 30.926 per cent of the region’s residents have received at least one vaccination dose so far.

Niagara Region trends
Current COVID-19 tier: Province wide-lockdown until May 20.
Previous tier: Red-Control until April 8.
COVID cases remained above 100 over the weekend with 143 cases on Saturday, and 169 cases on both Sunday and Monday. Cases decreased slightly on Tuesday with 144 cases reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. However, numbers surpassed the previous daily record of 196 reported on Jan. 8.
Five new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend. No new deaths were reported on Tuesday. The COVID-19 death count measured since the start of the pandemic in the region is 384.
2,360 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 424,911 total cases, with 374,213 cases resolved. There are 2,360 cases in hospitals, with 773 in intensive care and 537 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by 158, the number of those in intensive care increased by 18, and the number of patients on ventilators increased by 21 since Monday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 12,284 with 10,051 resolved. Of those cases, there are 1,849 active cases, up by 110 since Monday and 16 active outbreaks, down by one since Monday.
