New COVID cases continue to fluctuate, dropping again today by over 500 after yesterday’s increase in Ontario. Niagara.
Ontario reported 3,682 new cases of COVID-19 today against 4,212 yesterday. The seven-day average is now 4,176.
Meanwhile the Niagara Region reported 208 new cases today, a slight from yesterday’s report of 198.
There were also 40 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 7,829 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported one new death today. In total, 386 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 3,682 cases of #COVID19 and over 54,200 tests completed. Locally, there are 1,131 new cases in Toronto, 507 in Peel, 436 in York Region, 279 in Ottawa and 200 in Durham,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Thursday morning.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 245,420 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Thursday bringing the total number of vaccines administered across the country to more than 11,043,570. That means that 26.515 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Over 134,920 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 4,266,802 administered across the province so far. That’s 28.937 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 4,596 new doses were administered as of Thursday morning.
A total of 48,249 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.

The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 147,636. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 32.963 per cent of the region’s residents have received at least one vaccination dose so far.

Niagara Region trends
Current COVID-19 tier: Province wide-lockdown until May 20.
Previous tier: Red-Control until April 8.
COVID cases remained above 100 over the weekend with 143 cases on Saturday, and 169 cases on both Sunday and Monday. Cases decreased slightly on Tuesday with 144 cases reported. Cases were back up on Wednesday and Thursday with 199 cases and 208 reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. However, numbers surpassed the previous daily record of 196 reported on Jan. 8.
Five new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend. No new deaths were reported on Tuesday. One new death was reported on both Wednesday and Thursday. The COVID-19 death count measured since the start of the pandemic in the region is 385.
2,350 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 432,805 total cases, with 383,014 cases resolved. There are 2,350 cases in hospitals, with 806 in intensive care and 688 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 15, the number of those in intensive care increased by 16, and the number of patients on ventilators increased by 122 since Wednesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 12,676 with 10,111 resolved. Of those cases, there are 2,179 active cases, up by 159 since Wednesday and 17 active outbreaks, down by one since Wednesday.
