Several new indicators suggest the fight against COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario may be turning around as the province enters four week of its third lockdown.
For the sixth consecutive day the province is reporting more resolved cases, 3.908, than new cases.
Ontario reported 3,265 new cases today versus 3,510 new cases on Monday. The seven-day average is dropping, now 3,888.
There are now 2,336 people hospitalized in the province due to COVID-19 with 875 in the ICU. It is also the first time in three weeks that the number of ICU patients has not climbed day over day.
Meanwhile, the Niagara Region reported 101 new cases today, a drop from yesterday’s report of 160.
There were also 29 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 7,964 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported three new deaths today. In total, 390 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 3,265 cases of #COVID19 and 34,000 tests completed. Locally, there are 1,044 new cases in Toronto, 673 in Peel, 452 in York Region, 171 in Durham and 150 in Ottawa,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Tuesday morning.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 148,285 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Tuesday bringing the total number of vaccines administered across the country to more than 12,456,070. That means that 30.052 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Over 94,819 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 4,791,030 administered across the province so far. That’s 32.492 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 4,052 new doses were administered as of Tuesday morning.
A total of 55,062 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.

The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 167,581. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 37.416 per cent of the region’s residents have received at least one vaccination dose so far.

COVID cases remained above 100 on Saturday with 164 cases reported but dropped significantly on Sunday and Monday with 32 and 24 cases reported. However, this was due to a glitch that has now been corrected and updated. There were 101 cases reported today.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. However, numbers surpassed the previous daily record of 196 reported on Jan. 8.
No new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend. Three new deaths have been reported today. The COVID-19 death count measured since the start of the pandemic in the region is 390.
2,336 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 452,126 total cases, with 404,248 cases resolved. There are 2,336 cases in hospitals, with 875 in intensive care and 589 605 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by 65, the number of those in intensive care decreased by two, and the number of patients on ventilators decreased by 16 since Monday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 13,406 with 10,276 resolved. Of those cases, there are 2,740 active cases, up by 283 since Monday and 18 active outbreaks, up by two since Monday.
