A toppled sign on the Toronto-bound QEW near the Burlington skyway killed a 46-year-old motorist early Tuesday.

The Ontario Provincial Police said an excavator hit a road sign on the QEW in Hamilton, causing it to fall and strike a passing vehicle near the Eastport Drive exit.

Emergency crews were called to the scene just before 1 a.m. Tuesday. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The OPP said the driver is from Toronto. The man’s name has not been released.

The excavator was hauling equipment as it moved up the highway toward a construction zone near Nikola Tesla Boulevard, said the OPP. Police believe the excavator’s arm hit the road sign, causing it to collapse.

Police said the driver had no opportunity to react and respond to the incident.
