Ontario reported 3,480 new cases today versus 3,265 new cases on Tuesday. The seven-day average is dropping, now 3,783.
Meanwhile, the Niagara Region reported 146 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of 101.
There were also 24 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 7,988 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported one new deaths today. In total, 391 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 3,480 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 50,200 tests completed. Locally, there are 961 new cases in Toronto, 589 in Peel, 341 in Niagara and 290 in York Region,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Wednesday morning.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 171,049 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Wednesday bringing the total number of vaccines administered across the country to more than 12,735,374. That means that 30.727 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Over 116,173 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 4,907,203 administered across the province so far. That’s 33.280 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 3,852 new doses were administered as of Wednesday morning.
A total of 56,370 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.

The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 171,492. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 38.289 per cent of the region’s residents have received at least one vaccination dose so far.

COVID cases remained above 100 on Saturday with 164 cases reported but dropped significantly on Sunday and Monday with 32 and 24 cases reported. However, this was due to a glitch that has now been corrected and updated. There were 101 cases reported on Tuesday and 146 cases reported on Wednesday.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. However, numbers surpassed the previous daily record of 196 reported on Jan. 8.
No new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend. Three new deaths were reported on Tuesday and one new death reported today. The COVID-19 death count measured since the start of the pandemic in the region is 391.
2,281 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 455,606 total cases, with 408,765 cases resolved. There are 2,281 cases in hospitals, with 877 in intensive care and 605 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 55, the number of those in intensive care increased by two, and the number of patients on ventilators increased by 16 since Tuesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 13,551 with 10,307 resolved. Of those cases, there are 2,853 active cases, up by 113 since Tuesday and 17 active outbreaks, down by one since Tuesday.
