Ontario reported 1,135 new cases today, up slightly from the 1,095 new cases on Wednesday. This brings the seven-day average to 1,441.
Meanwhile, the Niagara Region reported 58 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of 39.
There were also 19 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 8,697 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported no new deaths today. In total, 405 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 1,135 cases of #COVID19 and over 37,700 tests completed. Locally, there are 316 new cases in Toronto, 271 in Peel and 75 in York Region,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Thursday morning.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 234,234 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Thursday bringing the total number of vaccines administered across the country to more than 22,173,280. That means that 53.639 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Over 143,748 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 8,530,698 administered across the province so far. That’s 57.855 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 4,143 new doses were administered as of Thursday morning.
A total of 99,224 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes as of Thursday.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 269,640. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 60.203 per cent of the region’s residents have received at least one vaccination dose so far.

COVID cases remained under 50 over the long weekend with 33 case on Saturday, 32 on Sunday, 30 on Monday, and 27 today. Cases rose slightly on Wednesday with 40 cases reported. Cases surpassed 50 on Thursday with 58 cases reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. However, numbers surpassed the previous daily record of 196 reported on Jan. 8.
No new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend or beginning of the week. Since the start of the pandemic, the COVID-19 death count in the region is 405.
1,072 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 527,180 total cases, with 501,942 cases resolved. There are 1,072 cases in hospitals, with 650 in intensive care, and 452 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by one, and the number of those in intensive care decreased by 22, and the number of those on ventilators decreased by 17 since Wednesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 15,660 with 14,400 resolved. Of those cases, there are 855 active cases, down by 27 since Wednesday and 13 active outbreaks, up by one since Wednesday.
