On Friday, October 10, 2025, members of the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) conducted R.I.D.E. spot checks in the City of Welland.
Throughout the night, officers stopped approximately 250 vehicles and asked each driver if they had consumed any alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening. In total, 18 drivers were required to provide a sample of their breath for analysis. Two drivers provided a sample resulting in an “Alert” and subsequently had their licences suspended for a period of 3 days.
In addition to the two roadside suspensions, police stopped a vehicle and discovered that the driver was a prohibited driver under the Criminal Code. The driver was issued a demand to provide a breath sample into an approved screening device and subsequently refused to comply. The 57-year-old male from the City of Welland was charged with obstruct police, operation while prohibited and refusal to comply with a demand. He subsequently had his vehicle impounded for 45 days.
The Niagara Regional Police Service remains committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E.
Impaired driving remains the leading criminal offence causing death in Canada.
This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of the Solicitor General as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) program.
