Smithville woman struck in downtown Hamilton car collision

A Smithville woman was struck by a vehicle in Hamilton on Wednesday morning and sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A Hyundai SUV and GMC truck collided at the intersection of Cannon Street East and James Street North in Hamilton Wednesday shortly before 11 a.m. The GMC truck hopped the sidewalk and struck a pedestrian waiting to cross. It then hit a Volkswagon Toureg south of the intersection.

The pedestrian, a 34-year old Smithville woman, was sent to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police say she is in stable condition.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 56-year old Hamilton man and the driver of the GMC, a 34-year old Niagara Falls woman, were both sent to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police have ruled out driver impairment, but continue to investigate other contributing factors, such as which vehicle had the right of way.
