Niagara Region reported new record high COVID-19 cases over the weekend with 136 cases.
There were 65 cases on Saturday and 71 on Sunday, both surpassing the previous highest daily case count of 63 cases seen on Nov. 10. The new record highs over the weekend come after case numbers came in at above 30 for four days last week.
The region reported 35 cases today and two new deaths.
Meanwhile, Ontario reported 1,940 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, bringing the seven-day average to 1,841.
There were 3,550 new cases in Ontario over the weekend with 1,873 new cases reported on Saturday and 1,677 new cases reported on Sunday.
“Ontario is reporting 1,940 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 57,100 tests completed. Locally, there are 544 new cases in Toronto, 390 in Peel, 191 in York Region, 134 in Hamilton and 114 in Windsor-Essex County. There are 1,535 more resolved cases,” said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier of Ontario and Minister of Health, on Twitter Monday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers including Waterloo with 71 new cases, Durham Region with 68 new cases, and Halton Region with 64. Other public health units reported 60 cases or less.
There were 17 new deaths reported on Saturday in the province and 16 deaths reported on Sunday. There were 23 new deaths reported today. There have been 3,798 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
There were no new deaths reported over the weekend in the Niagara Region. There were two new deaths reported today. In total, 89 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
857 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 142,121 total cases, with 121,563 cases resolved. There are currently 857 cases in hospitals, with 244 in intensive care and 149 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by 49, the number of those in intensive care increased by nine and patients on ventilators increased by 25 since Friday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region is now at 2,610 with 2,163 resolved. Of those cases, there are 358 active cases, increasing by 123 since Friday and 20 active outbreaks, up by five since Friday.
