The COVID-19 death count in the Niagara Region jumped over the Christmas weekend by 22, bringing the death toll to 121 in the region. This is the first time the death count was updated since Dec. 23. There were no new deaths reported today.
The Niagara Region also saw a new daily record today, with 138 new cases reported.
Meanwhile provincially, the Ontario government reported a new single-day record with 2,553 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday. Monday’s new cases in Ontario were 1,939. They were reported today, due to the statutory holiday yesterday.
There were 41 new COVID-19 deaths reported in Ontario today and 37 new deaths reported on Monday. This brings the total number of deaths in the province to 4,455.
“Ontario is reporting 2,553 cases of #COVID19 today, and 1,939 cases reported yesterday. Today, there are 895 new cases in Toronto, 496 in Peel, 147 in Windsor-Essex County, 144 in Hamilton and 142 in York Region,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter Tuesday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Durham Region with 108 new cases, London with 86 cases, Halton Region with 78, Ottawa with 65, and Waterloo and Guelph with 57. Other public health units reported 50 cases or less.
Niagara Region trends
The Niagara Region saw a new daily record today with 138 new cases reported. This comes after the region saw higher daily case numbers over the weekend and yesterday with reports above 60 throughout. Today’s report surpasses the previous highest daily case count of 126 cases seen on Dec. 19.
Niagara Region, along with the whole province, is now in the Grey-Lockdown tier of the COVID-19 response framework. The change started on Saturday, Dec. 26 and will last until Jan. 23 for Niagara and 26 other public health unit regions in Southern Ontario.
864 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 175,908 total cases, with 151,562 cases resolved. There are 864 cases in hospitals, with 304 in intensive care and 207 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 11, the number of those in intensive care increased by eight and patients on ventilators decreased by four since yesterday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region is now at 3,753 with 2,785 resolved. Of those cases, there are 847 active cases, increasing by 125 since yesterday and 23 active outbreaks, down by two since yesterday.
