Last day to vote in Pelham’s Ward 1 election

Today is the last day to vote in Pelham’s Ward 1 by-election. Polls close at 8 p.m. in Pelham.

The byelection vote will elect one candidate as a Ward 1 councillor for the 2018-2022 term. Marianne Stewart is one of two councillors currently representing Ward 1. The other councillor in Pelham’s Ward 1 was Mike Ciolfi, who died in April. The byelection will decide his replacement.

The polling results will be announced Wednesday and the elected councillor will begin their term on Sept. 21.

There are six candidates running for Ciolfi’s former seat. Here is additional information about voting in this byelection.

If you are unable to leave your home to vote, you can vote via mail if you registered to receive the special ballot kit via Canada Post between Aug. 4 and Aug. 24 or contacted the Clerk between Aug. 24 to Sept 11.

Who is eligible to vote:

  • You are eligible to vote if you are:
    • A Canadian Citizen
    • At least 18 years old
    • Reside in Pelham (Ward 1), or are the owner or tenant of land in Pelham (Ward 1) or the spouse of such owner or tenant
  • You are prohibited to vote if:
    • You are serving a sentence in a penal or correctional institution
    • A corporation
    • A person acting as executor or trustee, except as a voting proxy in accordance with section 44
    • A person convicted of the corrupt practice described in subsection 90(3) of the MEA, if the voting day falls in a time that is less than five years of which he or she was convicted

All current COVID-19 safety measures remain in place during these elections including physical distancing (voters must remain two metres apart from people who are not in the same household when in a public space) and mandatory face coverings (these must be worn in enclosed indoor spaces).

Residents are asked not to participate in face-to-face campaign activities or visit public facilities if they answer yes to any of the following:

  • Exhibit COVID-19 symptoms (as outlined in the self-assessment)
  • Have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID or is awaiting results in the last 14 days.
  • Have come in contact with someone who has returned from outside of Canada in the last 14 days.
  • Have travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days
