NRPS 1 District Officers Stand with Crossing Guards in St. Catharines and Thorold

On the morning of September 6, 2023, uniform officers from the 1 District (St. Catharines / Thorold) office of the Niagara Regional Police Service took part in a crosswalk safety initiative.

With it being just the second day of the 2023 return to school and considering a serious St. Catharines collision on September 5, 2023, where a 79-year-old female crossing guard was struck while on duty; officers joined up with on duty crossing guards.

Between 7:45am and 8:30am officers assumed high visibility positions at 15 cross walks in St. Catharines and Thorold with the emphasis being on cross walk and crossing guard safety.

Officers did conduct traffic stops of some vehicles. Two provincial offence notices (tickets) and two written warnings for speeding and stop sign offences. Of note a school employee was issued a warning for a stop sign offence in front on their own school.

The NRPS would like to remind motorists to slow down and drive with caution in school zones and near cross walks.
