On June 20th, 2022, at approximately 8:30am Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officers assigned to 8 District (Grimsby) responded to a residential condominium in the area of North Service Road and Winston Road, in the Town of Grimsby regarding an armed individual.
Initial investigation by uniformed officers confirmed the suspect was seen in the lobby carrying what was believed to be a handgun. After speaking with witnesses, uniformed officers confirmed the suspect retreated to an apartment inside the condominium. The suspect was contained inside his apartment by uniformed officers until the Emergency Task Unit (ETU), Negotiators, Canine (K9), and Detectives assigned to 8 District Criminal Investigative Branch (CIB) arrived on-scene.
NRPS Negotiators made contact with the suspect and over the course of four hours facilitated a peaceful surrender. Neither the suspect, members of the public, or police personnel sustained any injuries as a result of the interaction.
After receiving judicial authorization, 8 District Detectives executed a search warrant on the suspects apartment and recovered a replica black and silver pistol.
David MCDONNELL (29 years) of Grimsby was arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offence:
• Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
MCDONNELL was held in custody pending a bail hearing that occurred on June 21st, 2022, via video link to the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse, located at 59 Church Street in the City of St. Catharines. MCDONNELL was released from custody on a release order/undertaking and has a scheduled court appearance on July 19th, 2022, at 59 Church Street in the City of St. Catharines.
