The Niagara Region death count rose by 21 since Tuesday as the region reported 107 new cases. In total, 142 people have died from the virus in the region.
Meanwhile, the Ontario government reported another new single-day record with 2,923 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the seven-day average to 2,310.
There were 19 new COVID-19 deaths reported in Ontario today. This brings the total number of deaths in the province to 4,474.
“Ontario is reporting 2,923 cases of #COVID19 and over 39,200 tests completed. Locally, there are 998 new cases in Toronto, 441 in Peel, 408 in York Region, 158 in Durham and 144 in Windsor-Essex County,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter Wednesday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Halton Region with 114 new cases, Waterloo and Hamilton with 69 cases, Ottawa with 68, London with 67, and Simcoe-Muskoka with 65. Other public health units reported 50 cases or less.
Niagara Region trends
The Niagara Region saw a new daily record yesterday with 138 new cases reported and 107 new cases today. This comes after the region saw higher daily case numbers over the weekend and Monday with reports above 60 throughout. Tuesday’s report surpasses the previous highest daily case count of 126 cases seen on Dec. 19.
The COVID-19 death count also jumped over the Christmas weekend by 22 and Wednesday by 21, bringing the death toll to 142 in the region.
Niagara Region, along with the whole province, is now in the Grey-Lockdown tier of the COVID-19 response framework. The change started on Saturday, Dec. 26 and will last until Jan. 23 for Niagara and 26 other public health unit regions in Southern Ontario.
1,177 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 178,831 total cases, with 153,799 cases resolved. There are 1,177 cases in hospitals, with 323 in intensive care and 204 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases increased by 313, the number of those in intensive care increased by 19 and patients on ventilators decreased by three since yesterday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region is now at 3,860 with 2,910 resolved. Of those cases, there are 808 active cases, decreasing by 39 since yesterday and 26 active outbreaks, up by three since yesterday.
