St. Catharines Man Arrested After Lengthy Stand Off

On July 31, 2022, at approximately 3:23pm, 1 District – St. Catharines / Thorold uniform officers with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to an armed person / weapons call in St. Catharines.

Officers attended a building in the area of Geneva Street and Welland Avenue. The initial investigation determined that a property manager had been threatened by a male with knife. Officers located the male on the roof of a building armed with a knife.  The male refused to drop the knife, and officers from the NRPS Emergency Task Unit and Crisis Negotiators were called to the scene.

The male was contained on a roof.  Officers were able to access the roof with the assistance of the St. Catharines Fire Service and one of their ladder trucks.

Geneva Street between North Street and Welland Avenue was closed while negotiations were ongoing.

At 3:15am the suspect was arrested.

Rory Docherty (28 years) of St. Catharines has been arrested and charged with the criminal offence of:

Assault with a Weapon

Docherty was transported to a local hospital for medical care. At the time of this media release Docherty remains in hospital.  He will be released on a Form 10 Undertaking with a future court date.
