Suspect in Custody After Overnight Shooting in Fort Erie

On January 20th, 2023, at 10:23pm Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officers assigned to 5 District (Fort Erie) responded to what was reported as a disturbance on Bertie Street between Central Avenue and Concession Road, in the Town of Fort Erie.

Upon arrival, officers were directed to a 24-year-old male who had been shot.  Niagara Emergency Medical Service (NEMS) paramedics responded to the scene.  The victim was assessed prior to being transported to a local hospital.  The victim was airlifted by Ornge Air to an out-of-town trauma centre for advanced medical care.  The victim has since been released from hospital and continues to recover from home.

The shooting suspect was identified by responding officers and placed under arrest.  Subsequent investigation conducted by detectives assigned to the 5 District Criminal Investigative Branch has determined the victim and suspect are known to one and other.

Joey David BUCCILLI (23 years) of Fort Erie has been arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

• Possession of a firearm without a licence

• Discharge firearm with intent to wound

• Careless use of a firearm

• Aggravated assault

• Pointing a firearm

BUCCILLI is being held in custody pending an appearance in bail court that is scheduled to take place later today (January 21st, 2023) via video link to the John Sopinka Courthouse, located at 45 Main Street East in the City of Hamilton.
