The Ontario government reported 1,837 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, bringing the seven-day average to 2,011.
The Niagara Region reported 91 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of 112. The numbers have been hovering around 100 per day. However the weekly new case rate in the region has been dropping (see graph).

There were also 58 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 6,072 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported eight new COVID-19 deaths on Thursday. In total, 307 people have died from the virus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 1,837 cases of #COVID19 and over 69,000 tests completed. Locally, there are 595 new cases in Toronto, 295 in Peel, and 170 in York Region,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter Friday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Waterloo with 91 new cases, Guelph with 83 new cases, Durham Region with 59 cases, and Halton Region with 54. Other public health units reported 55 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 13,378 vaccine doses were administered in Canada bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 929,405. That means that 2.187 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 10,215 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 327,455 administered across the province so far. That’s 2.22 per cent of the provincial population.
Approximately 103 new doses were administered as of Thursday morning. A total of 3,993 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.
A total of 3,993 people have been vaccinated in Niagara Region by Niagara Public Health. Niagara Health says it has administered 2,417 vaccinations to health care staff.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 6,410. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 1.431 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far. **

Niagara Region trends
Today’s report is slight under 100 after, Thursday’s and Wednesday’s numbers were above. This came after the reports of 93 reported on Tuesday and 66 cases reported on Monday, the lowest daily case count since Dec. 26 when 61 cases were reported.
Case numbers over the weekend and this week remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
The death count went up by eight Tuesday, five on Wednesday, 10 on Thursday, and by eight today. This brings the total number of deaths to 307. Deaths are reported three times per week by NRPH on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
1,291 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 264,300 total cases, with 237,871 cases resolved. There are 1,291 cases in hospitals, with 360 in intensive care and 271 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 47, the number of those in intensive care decreased by two, and patients on ventilators decreased by five since Tuesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 7,743 with 6,214 resolved. Of those cases, there are 1,222 active cases, decreasing by 138 since Wednesday and 43 active outbreaks, same as Thursday.
