The Ontario government reported 2,632 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the seven-day average to 2,751.
On Tuesday, cases in the province dropped 1,913 cases, which was believed to be due to a technical issue with Toronto Public Health. This issue “is now resolved, with 102 cases added to today’s total,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott.
The Niagara Region reported 113 new cases today, an increase from yesterday’s report of 87.
There were also 46 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 5,614 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported five new COVID-19 deaths on Thursday. In total, 244 people have died from the virus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 2,632 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 70,300 tests completed. Locally, there are 897 new cases in Toronto, 412 in Peel, 245 in York Region, 162 in Ottawa, and 118 in Waterloo,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Twitter Thursday morning.
Public health units in Ontario also reporting higher case numbers include Durham Region and Windsor with 92 new cases, London with 76 cases, Simcoe-Muskoka with 70 new cases, and Hamilton with 69 cases. Other public health units reported 65 cases or less.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara **
More than 15,899 vaccine doses were administered in Canada bringing the total number of vaccines administered so far across the country to more than 712,141. That means that 1.734 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine
Over 15,899 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 253,817 administered across the province so far. That’s 1.721 per cent of the provincial population.
An initial vaccine supply arrived in the Niagara Region last Tuesday. Approximately 319 new doses were administered as of Thursday morning. A total of 2,760 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.
A total of 2,760 people have been vaccinated in Niagara Region by Niagara Public Health. Niagara Health says it has administered 2,417 vaccinations to health care staff.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 5,177. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 1.156 per cent of the region’s residents have been vaccinated so far.

Niagara Region trends
Today’s numbers are back above 100 after yesterday’s number dropped to 87 for the first time since Jan. 5. Case numbers over the weekend and beginning of the week have remained under the daily record of 471 cases last Monday, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. Numbers also remained below the previous daily record of 196 reported on Friday, Jan. 8.
The death count went up by four cases over the weekend and by six on Monday. There were 16 new deaths reported yesterday and five new deaths reported today. This brings the total number of deaths to 244. Deaths are reported three times per week by NRPH on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
1,533 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 247,564 total cases, with 215,887 cases resolved. There are 1,533 cases in hospitals, with 388 in intensive care and 293 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 65, the number of those in intensive care decreased by seven, and patients on ventilators decreased by three since Wednesday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 6,995 with 5,116 resolved. Of those cases, there are 1,585 active cases, decreasing by 85 since Wednesday and 55 active outbreaks, same as Wednesday.
