Large Fight in Downtown St. Catharines Results in Multiple Victims and Arrests – Update 1

Update 1

The 1 District detective office has been investigating this incident.  Detectives have been reviewing footage captured by the NRPS Real Time Operations Centre and canvassing the area of the incident.  The incident took place on St. Paul Street between James Street and Queen Street.  As a result of the ongoing investigation four persons were initially arrested.  Two persons have been released without charge.

Rohan Errol Chandler (27 yrs) of St. Catharines has been charged with the criminal offences of:

Assault with a weapon (3 counts) Possess schedule 1 substance (fentanyl, crystal methamphetamine, cocaine) (3 counts) Fail to comply with Probation

Victor Guy Clayton (54 yrs) of Niagara on the Lake has been charged with the criminal offence of:

Assault

Chandler was held in custody to attend a video bail hearing to the John Sopinka Courthouse to be held in Hamilton on September 11, 2022.

Clayton is being released from custody on a Form 10 Undertaking with a future court date.

Further investigation determined three adult males suffered injuries related to a knife, not five .  All three males have been treated and released.

The investigation remains ongoing by detectives. No suspects are believed to be outstanding, the persons who have been charged were known to the victims.

Anyone (residents or businesses) in the area with cell phone footage, closed circuit security cameras, doorbell video cameras, or dash cameras are asked to review their footage for activity related to this incident for the period between 2:00am and 3:00am on September 10, 2022.

Original Release – September 10, 2022 – 5:31am

On September 10, 2022, at approximately 2:30am 1 District St. Catharines uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to a large fight and reports of multiple stabbings in downtown St. Catharines.

Officers arrived to a chaotic scene in the area of St. Paul Street and James Street.  Working with Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics, officers located at least five persons suffering from superficial to serious injuries, four persons having stab wounds.  The injured persons were treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital for further care.

The investigation is in its very early stages.  There is an increased police presence in the area while we investigate.  At this time, we do have multiple persons in custody relating to this incident.  There is no ongoing threat to public safety stemming from this incident.

1 District detectives and members of the NRPS Forensic Service Unit have been assigned to the investigation.
