Ontario new COVID-19 cases rise by 800; Niagara Region cases decrease slightly

New COVID cases are increasing again today by over 800 after yesterday’s decrease in Ontario.

Ontario reported 4,505 new cases of COVID-19 today against 3,682 yesterday. The seven-day average is now 4,132.

Meanwhile, the Niagara Region reported 189 new cases today, a slight decrease from yesterday’s report of 208.

There were also 34 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 7,863 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.

Niagara Region reported one new death today. In total, 387 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.

“Ontario is reporting 4,505 cases of #COVID19 and over 56,200 tests completed. Locally, there are 1,257 new cases in Toronto, 1,232 in Peel, 412 in York Region, 247 in Ottawa and 224 in Durham,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Friday morning.

Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara

More than 246,921 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Friday bringing the total number of vaccines administered across the country to more than 11,405,557. That means that 27.428 per cent of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Over 133,872 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 4,400,674 administered across the province so far. That’s 29.845 per cent of the provincial population.

Niagara Health reported 4,641 new doses were administered as of Friday morning.

A total of 49,963 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes.

A total of 49,963 people have been vaccinated in Niagara Region by Niagara Public Health. Niagara Health says it has administered 78,424 vaccinations to health care staff.

The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 152,504. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 34.049 per cent of the region’s residents have received at least one vaccination dose so far.

COVID cases remained above 100 over the weekend with 143 cases on Saturday, and 169 cases on both Sunday and Monday. Cases decreased slightly on Tuesday with 144 cases reported. Cases were back up on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday with 199, 208, and 189 cases reported.

Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. However, numbers surpassed the previous daily record of 196 reported on Jan. 8.

Five new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend. No new deaths were reported on Tuesday. One new death was reported on both Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The COVID-19 death count measured since the start of the pandemic in the region is 387.

2,287 cases in Ontario hospitals

Ontario has now had 437,310 total cases, with 387,712 cases resolved. There are 2,287 cases in hospitals, with 818 in intensive care and 593 688 on ventilators.

Hospitalized cases decreased by 63, the number of those in intensive care increased by 12, and the number of patients on ventilators decreased by 93 since Thursday.

The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 12,863 with 10,145 resolved. Of those cases, there are 2,331 active cases, up by 152 since Thursday and 17 active outbreaks, same as Thursday.
