Ontario reported 3,887 new cases today versus 3,871 new cases on Thursday. The seven-day average has dropped to 3,722.
Meanwhile, the Niagara Region reported 120 new cases today, a decrease from yesterday’s report of 164.
There were also 21 new deaths reported in the province today. There have been 8,050 COVID-19 deaths in Ontario to date.
Niagara Region reported no new deaths today. In total, 392 people have died from the coronavirus in the region.
“Ontario is reporting 3,887 cases of #COVID19 and nearly 53,100 tests completed. Locally, there are 1,331 new cases in Toronto, 871 in Peel, 267 in York Region, 208 in Durham and 204 in Hamilton,” said Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott on Friday morning.
Vaccine doses administered in Ontario and Niagara
More than 199,197 vaccine doses were administered in Canada on Friday bringing the total number of vaccines administered across the country to more than 13,331,068. That means that 32.22 per cent of the Canadian population have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Over 112,214 of yesterday’s doses were given in Ontario, for a total of approximately 5,139,984 administered across the province so far. That’s 34.86 per cent of the provincial population.
Niagara Health reported 3,459 new doses were administered as of Friday morning.
A total of 58,556 doses have been administered in the region by Niagara Public Health in long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes as of Friday.
The total number of vaccinations in the region is at 178,815. Against a population of 447,888 (2016 census), that means about 39.92 per cent of the region’s residents have received at least one vaccination dose so far.

Current COVID-19 tier: Province wide-lockdown until May 20.
Previous tier: Red-Control until April 8.
COVID cases remained above 100 on Saturday with 164 cases reported but dropped significantly on Sunday and Monday with 32 and 24 cases reported. However, this was due to a glitch that has now been corrected and updated. There were 101 cases reported on Tuesday, 146 cases reported on Wednesday, and 166 cases on Thursday. Cases decreased by 46 on Friday, with 120 cases reported.
Case numbers have remained under the daily record of 471 cases on Jan. 11, the largest single-day jump ever seen in the region due in part to a backlog of cases being updated. However, numbers surpassed the previous daily record of 196 reported on Jan. 8.
No new COVID-19 related deaths have been reported over the weekend. Three new deaths were reported on Tuesday and one new death reported Wednesday. No new deaths have been reported on Thursday. One new death was reported today. The COVID-19 death count measured since the start of the pandemic in the region is 392.
2,201 cases in Ontario hospitals
Ontario has now had 463,364 total cases, with 417,252 cases resolved. There are 2,201 cases in hospitals, with 883 in intensive care and 632 on ventilators.
Hospitalized cases decreased by 47, the number of those in intensive care increased by one, and the number of patients on ventilators increased by 12 since Thursday.
The total number of confirmed cases in the Niagara Region now at 13,816 with 10,352 resolved. Of those cases, there are 3,072 active cases, up by 83 since Thursday and 18 active outbreaks, up by one since Thursday.
